Our annual Feel Your Breast campaign raises awareness for the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, and the importance of knowing your normal and checking your breasts. But breast health isn’t just a focus for October, it’s something to stay aware of all year round.
Breast cancer can affect anyone - women and men - at any age, which is why regular self-checks are so important. Around 1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and about 1 in every 100 cases occurs in men. Knowing how to check your breast health could make all the difference.
What to Look Out For
There are several signs that could indicate a change in your breast health. If you notice any of the following, it’s important to speak with your GP as soon as possible:
- Lumps or thickened areas
- Puckering, dimpling, or swelling around the breast, armpit, or collarbone
- Unusual changes in shape or size
- Nipple discharge
- Inverted nipples or a change in their direction
How to Check Your Breasts
You can do your checks in a way that suits you - standing in front of a mirror, lying down, in the shower, or while getting dressed. The key is consistency. Try setting a reminder for the first of every month - easy to remember and easy to stick with.
If you have periods, it’s best to check a few days after your cycle, when your breasts are less likely to feel tender or swollen.
1. Examine your armpits, across and beneath your breasts or chest, and your collarbones - anywhere there’s breast tissue.
2. Raise your arms above your head and look for any visual changes like dimpling, swelling, or bulging.
3. Lean forward slightly and check again for any changes in shape or texture.
4. Use the flat part of your fingers or palm, and feel around using gentle, circular motions. Some people prefer to do this with soapy or oily hands to make it easier, whatever feels comfortable for you.
If you find anything unusual, don’t panic but don’t delay either. Early detection saves lives. If your GP finds something that needs further investigation, they’ll refer you to a breast clinic, where specialists will take care of you and guide you through the next steps.
Checking your breasts regularly is one of the most empowering and proactive things you can do for your health.
